University, FET and Bursary Information South Africa
North-West University (NWU) is a multi-campus university with a footprint across two provinces. The Mafikeng and Potchefstroom Campuses are situated in the North-West Province and the Vaal Triangle Campus is in Gauteng. The head office, known as the Institutional Office, is in Potchefstroom, situated near the Potchefstroom Campus.
NWU was established on 1 January 2004 through the merger of two universities with very different histories, personalities and cultures: the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education and the University of the North-West. The staff and students of the Sebokeng Campus of Vista University were also incorporated, adding further to the richness of our heritage. The NWU is recognised as one of the best-managed and most innovative universities in South Africa.
As a multi-campus university, the NWU offers students choice and variety, both academically and geographically. Collectively, the three campuses have 15 academic faculties, which in turn consist of more than 50 schools. Some faculties also have centres and institutes offering short courses, other types of skills development and various community and commercial services.
Opportunities open up when you enrol as a student of the North-West University. NWU offers a vibrant student life and plenty of scope to develop talents in sport, arts and culture, community service and student leadership. The university offers a high level of support in the form of financial aid, counseling to help make the right study and career choices as well access to a range of health and wellness services. Bursaries and scholarships are available to academically deserving students who require financial assistance.
Accommodation is available on all three campuses with standard facilities that include 24-hour security, student restaurants, television rooms, lounges, recreation rooms and computer rooms, along with fully equipped laundry and ironing rooms. All residences are an easy walk away from the NWU’s academic, administrative and sports facilities.
