We asked a Masters student at Stellenbosch University to explain the ins and outs of studying Engineering!
Which engineering discipline did you choose?
I did my undergraduate degree in B.Eng Chemical Engineering (often referred to as Process Engineering).
I am currently studying my masters: M.Eng Chemical Engineering (Research).
Could you describe your typical day?
In undergrad, I would start class at from 8/9am, and end at 5pm with an hour or two’s break in between. I would get home at about 5 and relax for 2 hours or so, depending on how busy I was and how much I had to do. Then I would work until 11:30, and watch series until about 12:30.
Now that I’m postgrad, I work from 9am-5pm with one hour break in between. Because I am majoring in Research, there is a lot more flexibility with my time.
Is there time for a social life?
Yes there is, depending on your time management and year of study. I had to work every weekend in undergrad, but I don’t really have to now that I’m postgrad.
Do you get sleep?
Yes, luckily, 7-8 hours a day. Only pulled 4 “all-nighters” during undergrad!
What would your biggest tip be for those thinking of studying engineering?
You have to be passionate and motivated to work hard – laziness won’t cut it! You also need to be mathematic- and scientific-minded. There is no parrot-fashion studying – understanding and problem-solving type thinking are key!
